Concert Review: Cult Leader @ Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA 11/15/16

I've never heard Cult Leader before November 15th. I beg the pardon of Cult Leader and their following for my ignorance of the genre they represent. I'm going to open this post to the possibility for discussion on this genre (Metal Core, Grind Core, Death Metal) and similar genres. You can all thank Cult Leader for this opportunity to discuss.  I've heard the YouTube personality Tempo talk about the subtlety of the vocals and guitar sound that define these differences. I always thought it all sounded the same and was really kind of boring. My first exposure to the ultra grinding sound was a band called Death from the 80's. Blazing fast, demonic sounding vocals, intensity but who gives a shit when it all sounds the same!!! I've been curious about the subtlety but remembering what Death sounded like I never could drum up the patience to investigate. This night I would get my chance ready or not!!!

Concert Review: Elle King @ Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA 11/27/15

Elle King is larger than life.  She breaks barriers with her music.  She tears down stereotypes about how women are supposed to act.  She lives life to the fullest and at 26 she is already battle-scarred. She wears her heart on her musical sleeve.  She takes no prisoners and boasts no regrets.  And we love her for all of this.  Despite claiming she's not America's Sweetheart, she is turning into exactly that.

Echo & The Bunnymen @ Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA 08/19/14

These days I am still on my Sentimental Tour.  Most of my current concert experiences are revisiting bands from my youth that I never had a chance to see.  Money was scarce when I was a teen and what little I had went to vinyl, cassettes, and on occasion CD's if it was a sure thing that I would love the album.

Now that I am older, so are the crowds.  The are more laid back and appreciative, and surprisingly the bands still sound great even though they are in their 50's and 60's. Echo & The Bunnymen would prove to be no different.

Baroness @ The Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA 05/24/13

Sometimes, Facebook is a good thing.  If it wasn't for a friends post praising the new album, Yellow and Green, by Baroness, I still may not have heard of them.

Mayer Hawthorne @ The Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA 04/18/2012

This is a typical musical discovery for me.  Let me set the scene for you.

- After Midnight
- Backyard Tiki Bar
- A Night of Drinking with Friends
- Spotify

A friend and I were taking turns choosing songs on Spotify.  We were discussing top 5 artists and we had two in common.  Whiskeytown and Neutral Milk Hotel.  But then he hit me with a curveball.  He asked if I had heard of Mayer Hawthorne.  I was a little puzzled.  I had not.  He told me that he had recently seen him at a cool, small venue in North Philadelphia called Johnny Brenda's.  He told me about this brilliant concert full of music that was a throwback to Motown.
