What We're Listening To Wednesdays - 05/13/15 Edition

Behind the scenes at My Music, My Concerts, My Life there is not much work getting done.  A typical day consists of late night, drunken ramblings and Meme wars.  Occasionally, true music discovery does happen.  Sometimes the musical conversations backstage are better than what gets published.  To capture this, we are going to try to check in once a week and share what is getting us off musically.   It may be one of us, it may be all seven of us.  Regardless, we will be offering the gift of music discovery.  Join in with us on Twitter every Wednesday with your ear candy with the hashtag #whatwerelisteningto. We will retweet them for the masses to enjoy.  I have started an Rdio playlist with this week's selections.  The link is at the end of this post.  We will just keep adding to it every week making it one gigantic playlist.  Think of us when you listen to it.

Fran- 311 / Creatures (For A While)

"Is there ever a time
when the state of sleeping willingly leaves my mind?"

My Life is pure chaos right now.   My father just passed away.  I am recently divorced.  I am constantly on the go with my two boys getting them to and from where they need to be with their hectic schedules.  It is the busy season at my place of employment. My sister is visiting from England and I haven't slept more than 5 or 6 hours a night for months.  To top it off my left ear has been closed for a week.  I have been getting chronic headaches and I have been battling indigestion for the last three days.  Not that I am one to complain.

I was sitting in the car, exhausted, waiting for my youngest son to finish lacrosse practice.  I was feeling completely worn out.  I was listening to music and feeling that I was tired of feeling this way.  I was tired of feeling run down. Tired of feeling sick.  I wanted to feel like myself again.  I needed some upbeat music.

There are times that music knows what you are feeling before you do.  Without rhyme or reason this song popped in my head.  I have no idea why.  It just happened to fit perfectly.  It captured exactly how I was feeling.  I listened to it.  Then again.  Then again.  Repeat process.  Today, I sit here with a smile on my face as I type this.  Hopefully, it does the same for you.  Enjoy.

Joel - Engine Kid / Jumper Cables

Before Sunn O))) , Before Goatsnake, There was Engine Kid. Angel Wings came out in 1995 and has been in my regular rotation ever since. This song is my favorite from this album. If you like it you should also check out the split they did with Iceburn.

Stephanie - Black Lab / Anything

I've rediscovered Black Lab recently, or at least their entire catalog.  "Ten Million Years" is always on my Sleep playlist but I've been listening to more of the old stuff the last couple weeks.  "Anything" is off their debut album "Your Body Above Me" from 1997.  That's the year I got married and it boggles my mind that an album that old is still this good to the current me.

Cathleen - Death Cab for Cutie / Black Sun

I have listened to Death Cab for Cutie’s “Black Sun” more times now than Ben Gibbard says “I loved you, Guinevere” on “We Laugh Indoors.” Which is a lot. Though I am not a loyal devotee of all Death Cab for Cutie, I am obsessed with a number of their songs. Gibbard consistently writes melancholy, transcendent songs that sound incredible through big-ass headphones, and those are my favorites. “Black Sun” is on a par with their other beautifully gloomy tunes and, like those, took one listen to fall in love with. Solo guitar notes hauntingly resonate through Gibbard’s impassioned, heart-rending lyrics—it’s hard to not get strung into the emotion of the song as it drives slowly into despair. The story becomes clear with the lyrics, “there’s a dumpster in the driveway of all the plans that came undone.” And though at first listen you might realize the song is about Gibbard and his ex-wife, Zooey Deschanel, by the fifth listen you’ll be lost in your own story of the song—the one you see yourself in. And when it ends, you’ll hit repeat and do it all again.

Until Next Time!!!!

  2. Probably shouldn't link to an Rdio playlist in a protected account.

    1. Thanks for the heads up. I assumed that even though my account is protected that the playlist would still be public. (edit: I just checked my settings and the playlist is public so it should be visible and playable by anyone.)
